About

United Comedy Academy

Our educational programs allow locals in Wichita Kansas to try improv, practice improv, and perform improv in front of a live audience who also play a part of the performance as their suggestions inspire the show. Through learning the tools and rules of improvisation, students not only connect with their internal genius but are encouraged to build something bigger than self on stage, in the moment, never to be created the exact same ever again.

Or something like that.

About

Sharla Hale - Founder and Artistic Director

With a BA in Theatre from Georgia Southern University, Sharla took a leap of faith that took her to Hong Kong for two years immediately after graduating. Here, under contract with Dramatic English, she guided students in public schools to speak English with confidence through Drama Classes. With a need to perform, she found herself in an improv ensemble, People's Liberation, showcasing short form improv to locals and tourists alike at Take Out Comedy Club. The spark for her love of improv became fully lit, surrounded by an ensemble made up of all ages and from all over the world. Fueled by this new found passion, once her time in Hong Kong came to an end she knew there was only one place to go - Chicago. Here she lived, breathed, coughed up, and became obsessed with improv comedy. She completed classes at Second City, Annoyance, and Long Form Improv Training with Jimmy Carrane. She produced and performed multiple improv and sketch shows at The Second City, The Annoyance, ComedySportz, The Public House, The iO Theater, The Playground, and Theater Wit. When she noticed an upcoming audition for pH Productions, an ensemble in Chicago that featured fast paced, audience interactive long form improv and sketch, she had no idea what was in store. After seeing a pH improv show she knew immediately she had to be part of this team. They were completely fearless, insane, and passionate about live comedy. She made the team and pH became her home for five years. This cast eventually built their own theater in the Chicago neighborhood, Andersonville. The content that was created in that theater was endless and unique - new improv forms, sketch, full length musicals, holiday shows, kids shows, anything to keep people coming back and to keep the doors open. During her work here she also joined the pH College Program, coaching students from Loyola University, and guiding them through their weekly performances at College Night. She also took time outside pH to complete the Second City Conservatory program. In 2016 She took a break from the Windy City to live in Japan for a year, teaching English in a small town, Okaya, in the Nagano Prefecture. She returned to Chicago  to see that the pH Comedy Theater was closing their doors. She joined her team once more to perform their farewell shows. She now lives in Wichita where her passion for improv refuses to be snuffed out and she continues to spread the joy that is improv. She currently performs around Wichita with a wonderful team, "Say What?! Improv". Catch her at a show at Vorshays!

We are proud to offer classes and shows that celebrate the art of comedy. Join us as we continue to grow and bring laughter to Wichita.

"Sharla was a phenomenal teacher. The class had both structure and creative freedom which is often difficult to get in an improv class. It was exactly what I needed to get back into Improv after a while of being on the outside. Definitely recommend!"
